LEFT FILM NIGHT presents:

COCALERO

Bolivia is in the news, so for our next Left Film Night we will show Cocalero. Written and directed by Alejandro Landes, Cocalero offers fresh insight into big political changes afoot in Latin America. Earlier in this decade, the Bolivian government, backed by Washington, attempted to eradicate coca crops, devastating the livelihood of Indigenous people who cultivate it. In response, the farmers formed a powerful union. Their leader, the Aymara Indian Evo Morales, made an historic bid for the presidency in 2005. Cocalero closely follows Evo Morales’ election campaign - where he proposes the redistribution of wealth, renationalization of industries and legalization of coca products - and wins by an unprecedented majority.

2. Next Discussion Group

Our discussion group on Monday was a success, we discussed topics such as local and world economics, the economic crisis of capitalism vs. the economies of socialist countries and those moving towards socialism. We did not begin discussion of the Activists Guide to Political Economy (.pdf attached) because the copies of the book were delayed in the mail. As a result, we will continue with that topic at our upcoming discussion group.

The reading will be "Activist's Guide to Political Economy" by our own comrade Jason Mann. Copies are on order currently and should be available soon. This will likely take a couple of discussion groups to get through, so start thinking about what you want to see us move on to next!

Once again, the discussion groups are open to all members of the Young Communist League, the Communist Party and guests who are genuinely interested in learning more about Communist philosophy, theory and practice and getting involved. They are a place for open discussion and debate where your thoughts can be heard and your questions can be answered. After the discussion group, those in attendance will decide what the next month’s topic will be.

Our discussion group on Monday was a success, we discussed topics such as local and world economics, the economic crisis of capitalism vs. the economies of socialist countries and those moving towards socialism. We did not begin discussion of the Activists Guide to Political Economy because the copies of the book were delayed in the mail. As a result, we will continue with that topic at our upcoming discussion group.

The reading will be "Activist's Guide to Political Economy" by our own comrade Jason Mann. Copies are on order currently and should be available soon. This will likely take a couple of discussion groups to get through, so start thinking about what you want to see us move on to next!

Once again, the discussion groups are open to all members of the Young Communist League, the Communist Party and guests who are genuinely interested in learning more about Communist philosophy, theory and practice and getting involved. Barbara Kopple’s Academy Award–winning Harlan County USA (1976, 103 minutes) unflinchingly documents a grueling coal miners’ strike in a small Kentucky town. With unprecedented access, Kopple and her crew captured the miners’ sometimes violent struggles with strikebreakers, local police, and company thugs. Featuring a haunting soundtrack—with legendary country and bluegrass artists Hazel Dickens, Merle Travis, Sarah Gunning, and Florence Reece—the film is a heartbreaking record of the thirteen-month struggle between a community fighting to survive and a corporation dedicated to the bottom line.

International Workers Day (May Day, May 1st) is fast approaching and there are two events we should be aware of on that day. The first is a May Day march and rally being held starting at 5:30pm beginning at Clark park (14th & Commercial) and marching down Commercial Dr. to Grandview Park for a rally.

The second event is a forum being organized by B.C. Labour Against War which is being held starting at 7pm at the CAW Hall (326 12th St.) in New Westminster.

Please respond via e-mail to redstar@ycl-ljc.ca if you are able to attend either of these events. We should aim to get Rebel Youth Magazine out to any young people attending the events and make bring our banner to the rally.

3. Rock for a Living Wage

The Vancouver & District Labour Council Young Workers Committee is organizing a concert entitled "Rock for a Living Wage" to raise awareness of the $10 NOW campaign to raise the minimum wage and eliminate the training wage. They are currently in the process of setting a date and lining up the bands.
